Beginning in RC Helicopters?

So I was looking into going into RC Helicopters. I was looking at the Blade MCPX because I want something small to fly inside but if I want I can fly outside. And also in RC terms what does 3D and CP mean?

Answer
CP means collective pitch, meaning when you turn the idle switch on, the blades speed up to full power and when the throttle stick is in neutral the blades produce zero lift. when you push the stick up, it produces positive lift, ie goes upward. when you push it down, it produces negative lift, ie it can fly upside down.

As far as 3d goes, this is the best way to describe it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3h_xgOykFw
The video is about 3g, a type of helicopter head/gyro system, but the flying style is 3d.

If you are just starting out, the mcpx will NOT be suitable.get an mcx or other coaxial (two sets of main rotors) heli, as they are easy to fly and will allow you to get oriented with controls.

Where to find information on remote control helicopters?

Jall K

Preferably an active UK forum or detailed site, that covers small indoor RC helicopters. Non UK fine too of course.

Answer
If it was me I would start by searching for which helicopter you think you want to buy, then take the name of that and type it in the search on youtube and see what comes up. A picture's worth a thousand words, and a video way more than that. You can see what other people are using and what sort of things the helicoptor is capable of, and you might see one on there that you decide you like better. Good Luck!

what rc helicopter should i choose?

emmanuel q

ok i have been debating on what rc copter i should get , now i have a exi 450 and a blade cx2 but im trading my cx2 for a msi mother board and a and a nvidea 540 gpu with 4g of ram from my lil brother and i was thinking of replacing it with a exi 250 http://www.xheli.com/pyro-250-exi-micro-helicopter.html or a guai quadcopter http://www.flying-hobby.com/shop/gaui-330x-quadflyer-s-version-wo-gu344-gyro-p-7749.html and now just found a scorpion quadcopter
http://www.goodluckbuy.com/scorpion-y650-multi-copter-y6tcopter-folding-frame-kit-y6t-y-type-multicopter.html ..so im torn from with one i should get cause i like all three but only have space for one so the link here is to see my collection witch is half done > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZmw9abxvGo&feature=plcp&context=C2abdfUDOEgsToPDskLEIBaTQ21yHVYx887mXgcU so let me know what you think or opitions

Answer
Cool collection!

If you really enjoyed your EXI 450 you might just consider moving to the EXI 250, its pretty much the same helicopter wrapped up in a smaller package. If you are just interested in relacing your 450 I would just scale down a bit. Nothing lost--nothing gained.

The Scorpion is hot too, but quad copters are really best if you want to get into doing video where you need a stable platform to mount your camera for aerial photography.

If you think you may want to get into aerial photography definitely go this way.

Here is a resource that might give you for a few more ideas:
http://electricrchelicopterreviews.com/

I have not tried a quad copter yet myself, but it definitely does sound interesting!

Cheers

Answer
They are the drive gears to connect the motor to the rotor
The small pinion gears are connected to the motor shaft and the large main gears to the helicopter blade rotor shaft like this:

IF you need to replace them, this is what they will look like:

Could somebody fly a small RC helicopter ,that has a camera, over Area 51 and take footage of it?

Michalis

If someone wanted footage of Area 51, couldn't they just take a small RC helicopter and attach a video camera to it, then fly it over Area 51 and record footage of it? If so, how come somebody hasn't done so then put it on Youtube or something?

Answer
More than likely, it would get shot down. The guards can shoot anyone who goes near there, as well.

For RC Helicopters, Is there any landing gear for landing on water?

paympinyoo

Answer
Yes, there is.
For the bigger nitro powered helis, swimming pool noodles work well. Cut a section, slit it to fit over the existing gear, and zip tie it on.
Also, 2 liter pop bottles have been used.

Smaller electric helis do not need as much flotation.

RC helicopter replacement parts after a crash?

Txter D

okay, i recently bought a fixed pitch rc helicopter (E-flite Blade CP). Its still in the shipping process but a lot of ppl say a crash is unavoidable when ure learning, so i was thinking about buying some spare parts in advance but i am not sure on what to get. What do you think are some good replacement parts to have on stand-by? rotor blades? small screws? main rotor head? im not sure, but any suggestions are appreciated.
thanks

Answer
Just watched some flight video of that heli on youtube, looks nice by the way and congratulations.

It looks like all you may need are a set or two of replacement blades. It's light weight enough so that a crash while learning will only damage blades...if that. Most RC Heli's today have a blade set up that prevents blade damage, but it never hurts to have a spare set.

Good luck, and have fun.

Where can i find five foot long rc helicopter blades?

Me and a friend are building a giant scale UH-60 Black hawk. We have the tail rotor blades, but we cant find main rotor blades big enough. We could get them custom made, but that would cost more than the $130 that we have to spend on blades. Your help is appreciated. Please be specific!

Answer
I have heard of movie business pros using 7 foot long body rc choppers, but the biggest I have information have 810mm blades.

www.bergenrc.com/

You are almost into real helicopter territory, this company supplies small blades, with 6 foot blades starting at $675/set

www.vortechinternational.com/

If you had a few grand more you could look into a turbine engine

www.pstjets.com/

Here's an old home built design with plans

www.vortechonline.com/g1/

And a strap on hilo prototype that cost perhaps $15,000 to $30,000 to produce

Is the air hog havoc heli a good copter?

trevor

So I saw a helicopter called havoc heli. It's the one where u can adjust the little fin on the black stick. So is it a good plane.

Answer
Well the Havoc heli will work but in the long run, your gonna want something better. Don't waste your money on the little Airhogs stuff that break after a period of time. The heli I would recommend would be the E-Flite Blade mCX! $79.99 RTF(Ready to Fly) so there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING you need to complete the package. But here are some terms in case you need to know them. The Black Stick is called the tail boom, The little fin you could call the tail fin so that's ok. The Heli that i am recommending is 4 channel which means 4 functions. On the Havoc, you only have 2 which is Up/down, Rotate(yaw) Left/Rotate(yaw) left. That's it. The mCX however is 4 channel so it can do the functions the havoc can do and it can go Forward/Backward and move Side/to Side and it's a much better design and it's actually a real heli. Even though it's the same size as the havoc, it's far bigger in it's possibilities! I know $80 might sound a lot but you will LOVE it GUARANTEED! I have been in this hobby for about 3 years now flying gas and electric and trust me you will love the mCX. So the website you get QUALITY stuff is at HorizonHobby.com and they are having a sale that when you buy one Ultra Micro(the mCX is called ultra Micro because it's small) but you can get $10 back so it's really $70. Don't get BNF because that's a little cheaper but it doesn't come with the Transitter (Remote but it's really called transmitter) so you need your own DSM2(Technology the heli uses) and you probably don't have one because they are about $150 and up and so you should really get the RTF because it comes with everything. Please don't get havoc as it will break in a few days of arrival. The mCX also comes with better warranty, protection(cardboard box that you store the heli in). Many people get Quality stuff and end up having a much better time with it. The heli is made by the company E-Flite which is a very good company and is very reliable. They also make heli's for people who are looking for the next step which is the Blade mSR but that's down the road. The mCX is a better choice for someone who hasn't flown a professional RC Heli. Good Luck with your choosing and I really hope you get the mCX just because it will do you much better in the long run. Anyways, you can check out my YouTube channel which is Rcflyyer1 and I have videos of RC Planes and Helis. If you go and visit your local hobbyshop, they will tell you mCX is the best or they may tell you the Scout is better (3 Channel Helicoptor) but my mCX has never let me down :)

When will the military stop using overpriced military contractors?

And look for innovative citizens who can make things cheaper and far more innovative? As demonstrated by this video.

Reagan - Don't be asinine. Building a huge helicopter drone isn't going to be doing anything for surveillance besides making a huge overpriced target. That's likely to be shot down and reengineered by entrepreneurial Chinese technicians.

Answer
Actually, you'd be surprised at how much DARPA will talk to people from small industry and businesses to make developments. I know a lot of the Navy relies on small business for our work (especially in the industrial/manufacturing side of things). These guys just haven't sold it to the right people. And there's a really thorough contracting and testing process for things like this. People in the defense industry are great at saying they can come up with all sorts of great things cheaper, but then don't deliver. Once you have to try and make it meet government standards, it gets harder.

The military will stop using overpriced contractors when they can produce it on their own, cheaper. Which will never happen, since the military has gotten out of the "owning industries" business, and relies on civilians to do it cheaper.

While he may have reduced production costs, he's made some of the other costs harder. Wireless RC remotes aren't going to work for counter-IED robots. Wires are better. If you have to go with wireless, that's going to cost you a lot in making the controls work around the counter-IED Jamming.

A lot of the reason we go with big companies is experience-they know how to deal with government contracting. It's easier some of the times to go with familiarity who can meet government standards. This is before we talk about the overall program development process, which is a huge bureaucratic nightmare that has some areas that rightly should be reformed.

"Building a huge helicopter drone isn't going to be doing anything for surveillance besides making a huge overpriced target"

O RLY? Because you've seen the videos and watched what they can do? I have, and I vehemently disagree with your statement. Even if they get shot down, so what? It's cheaper to do that than use a manned aircraft to do the same thing, since there's no risk of pilots getting killed. And actually, they are FAR less of a target, than a manned aircraft. They crash more, but that's a developmental phase and control problem. Again, though, who cares if they crash?
