Best beginner outdoor rc helicopter?

I purchased a syma s107 last month, and im having tons of fun with the little thing indoors. Now i feel i'm ready to move onto a larger, outdoor rc helicopter( to be flown in slight wind ). For the money, what helicopter is best for a beginner? I've been looking on my own and theres just too many for me to make a decision.. I want to try and get the best heli i can for the money (<$150).

Answer
I have heaps of mini helicopters especially the Syma S107- I also have the Syma S032 which is the bigger brother and is not infra red remote so flies out side on a calm day.

It really gets down to how much you might want to spend- If you start going into the hundred dollar mark plus you can not beat Nine eagles helis and of course models from Walkera. First consider cost if you are going to single coaxial blade helicopters they are considerable harder to fly and getting a simulator from Say Ebay for $20 is well worth it as you can practice on your computer. You see one is going from a 3 channel helicopter (syma107) to 4 and 6-7 channel helicopters which have lot more movement hence control gets harder.

I got a Walkera Dragonfly 4G6S 6CH Metal RC Helicopter with a brushless motor for $300 now I know that is more than you want to spend, however my advice is I know once you fly a 4 channel helicopter you will wish you had spent a bit more money to go the full hog as you will be totally hooked, The difference of spending $300 to $150 for a rc helicopter is enormous-built really well many spares available and easy to repair and made of high quality materials, also the remotes can be $200 on their own which are supplied with say the Dragon fly and can be binded with other helicopters.

In your price you can not beat the Skyartec NINJA 400 CCPM 6CH RC Helicopter for around $170- I have put some links to where I buy my helis below-hope that helps.

What are some of the better small Indoor/Outdoor RC Helicopters like the "air hog"?

Brad

Moneys not really an issue, but I don't want to spend like $250 for some RC helicopter I just want to have a little fun with- so $15-40 is my preferred spending area, but I could go higher. Probably not more than $120 or so though.

I did a little search and people are asking really complex questions- like comparing features that don't make any sense to me. I don't know anything about RC helicopters, although I do fly RC gas powered hobby airplanes.

A friend of mine had an air hog that worked great, but then his younger brother got a new air hog for christmas that is different, and doesn't work too well. I've seen other brands that don't work so great either. Does anyone have any recommendations for some of the better "cheap" (as opposed to those several hundred dollar gas RC helicopters my father used to fly) electric mini RC helicopters that can be used indoors and out? Thanks

Answer
For your price range, don't expect a helicopter that can fly outdoors, but you can have a lot of fun with the little indoor electric helicopters with twin main rotors. I can commend the E-Flite brand. They do a little one called the Blade mCX. I fly a slightly bigger one, the Blade CX2, which has had excellent reviews, and which can be taken out on a very calm day. If you don't want to spend as much as that I have also had good fun with the tiny Silverlit helicopters, including the PicooZ TandemZ, which is like a baby Chinook.

I recently got a $50 RC helicopter from Walmart. it's pretty sturdy and works really well, but I'm starting to get bored with it. It seems to only have the most basic functions and minimal speeds that any RC helicopter has.
I don't want anything TOO too fancy, just a really reliable precision RC helicopter no longer than 20". The most I'm willing to spend is $250.

Answer
I don't like the air hogs very much like the other answer suggests. Here are a couple that I have and like:

This is a mini. It's awesome especially for the price:
http://www.amazon.com/Syma-S107-S107G-Helicopter-Yellow/dp/B004A8ZRB0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1364698569&sr=8-1&keywords=Syma

This is also a mini. It's cool in the dark and flies very fast and stable:

http://www.amazon.com/Night-Hunter-Xtreme-Glow-Helicopter/dp/B007IRJQLW/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1364698633&sr=1-1&keywords=night+hunter+xtreme+glow+in+the+dark+rc+helicopter

A little bigger:

is Metal 3-Channel Remote Control Mini RC 6020 Helicopter any good?

Daniel E

///i wont to buy it but not sure if its good .. and if it breaks easy or not/??????

Answer
Yes, it is good. But, if you're a beginner I would suggest this:

http://www.amazon.com/Syma-S107-S107G-Helicopter-Yellow/dp/B004A8ZRB0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1313625384&sr=8-2

Best beginner RC heli out. Like the others, if you are NOT a beginner then buy a 4 channel. 3 channels are made for beginners. If you want the full expierence get a 4 channel

Gaurav A.

I know I'm asking a lot of question about Black Ops, but I just wanna know

Answer
3 Spy Plane - UAV that detects enemies
3 RC-XD - A remote control car that detonates when you pull the trigger
4 Counter spy plane - Blocks the radar from enemies HUD
4 SAM Turret - A placeable turret that attacks enemy aircraft
5 Care Package - Airdrops a random killstreak or ammo crate (has some unique unattainable killstreak rewards that you can't actually earn without using the care package, like a mini gun that has 500~ bullets that kills in 2 or so shots [fires really quickly as well but limits movement].
5 Napalm Strike - Air strike that covers an area in Napalm (Fire that instantly kills anyone in the blast + kills anyone stupid enough to walk over it)
6 Sentry Gun - Deployable Sentry gun.
6 Mortar Team - Lets you target 3 separate areas on the map to mortar strike
7 Attack Helicopter - A helicopter you place on the map that attempts to kill enemies.
7 Valkyrie rockets - Gives you a rocket launcher which you can move the rockets midflight ( 3 / 4 shots I think? don't remember exactly)
8 Blackbird - Enhanced UAV that shows exact locations of all enemies for the duration continuously (instead of the spy plane strobe that occasionally detects enemies) that also shows enemies using Ghost perk.
8 Rolling Thunder - Calls in a directional bombing airstrike
9 Chopper gunner - Calls in a helicopter where you are the gunner.
11 Attack dogs - Calls in a pack of attack dogs (Kills people in 1 hit rather then 2 like in WaW)
11 Gunship - Calls in a helicopter which you control both the guns and flight. Can also use missiles from the heli.

How long do I charge my Honeybee FP heli (stock) battery for?

mini rc helicopter manual
on Hawk Talon 3CH Durable Mini Helicopter RC Infrared Control Lipo ...
mini rc helicopter manual image

sls.spec

Okay, I got my Honeybee FP in the mail today. I'm trying to charge the stock battery (I'll charge the others later on). It's an ESky 8.4v 650mAh NI-MH (Ek1-0100).

It doesn't say how long to charge the battery for. The manual literally says "During the charging process, you can determine whether the battery is fully charged as follows:

1. Voltage measurement:
Use a voltage indicator. This is the best way.

2. Temperature:
When charging, examine the temperature of the battery all the time. When the temperature of the battery is rising, it shows that the charging is close to finish. Please turn off the charger.

3. Calculation of the charging time.:
charging time = capacity of the battery/charging current."

Why does this poor English translation not surprise me? I guess I should have known they would give me a charger that doesn't even have a stupid indicator light on it to tell me when the battery is charged.
Is there a specific amount of time anyone charges their battery for?

I'm dividing the capacity of the battery (volts or mAh's?) by the charging current.

The charger output is: 12VDC 300mA. The charger itself gets very hot after being plugged in for just a few minutes...but I don't feel the battery warming. Can something give me a time estimate...how long do you charge yours for? I can see that this is going to get annoying, and I'm going to have to get a charger that will actually give me some sort of indication that the battery is fully charged.

Answer
Hi,
If you have 650mAh batteries and are using a charger that charges at 300mAh, then a typical charge will be a bit over 2 hours.
The first few times that you charge and discharge the pack, it will not deliver full capacity. So the heli may be underpowered. After 4 or 5 charge cycles, it should be better.

You might want to read up on the dedicated RC heli forums.

What kind of rc helicopter should I be getting?

My dad is going to be getting me something for Christmas, $85 limit. I want a rc helicopter. Ive only had cheap walmart ones before, so i need some expertise. Im wanting a namebrand fairly decent sized helicopter that will be able take some minor crashes. I did a little research and it seems that the Align T-Rex 250 is decent. Any ideas? Remember I have $85 to spend, including taxes and shipping.

Answer
I wouldn't recommend the Align T-Rex 250, and it's over the budget anyways? The smaller the helicopter, the more crashes it can resist, and the cheaper the replacement parts are. Just the battery looks like it's 3 times more expensive than a mini helicopter, and you will need extra batteries if you would like to fly for more than 10 minutes.

Do you have a radio/controller already? If you do, you could buy the BNF version of the helicopter and it will be cheaper. If you don't, then look for the RTF version that comes with a radio/controller.

The Blade MCX RTF is $80 at Horizon Hobby
http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/blade-mcx-rtf-EFLH2200
It's a coaxil heli, so you will have to fly it indoors and outdoors only when it's not too windy. It can take a good beating, better than the t-rex, and the parts are pretty cheap.

These 3 are some I have looked at while I was doing research about rc helicopters when I wanted to purchase one. These are fun, you won't be able to do 3D tricks with them though. It depends how many channels was the one you had, these are 3 channels and good practice.

The Syma S107 is $27 at amazon. It's a beginner helicopter, but it's small and reviews say it does good in taking crashes (4 out of 5 stars).

The Helizone Combat fighter 3.5 Channels looks fun. It's $36.99 on amazon, and you can look up videos on youtube.

The Syma S107C has a built in camera, and it's $39 on amazon.

I purchased the Nano CP X BNF, and a DX6i receiver, and depending your age and experience, this is not a beginner one. But it's just something to look for in the future if you want to get into the hobby. The heli cost me $160 online, and the reciever/controller (DX6i) cost me $70 USED.

You could also suggest to him to look on craigslist for used ones, don't be uptight about it and demand a new one if your father can't afford ones over $85. I bought the DX6i for my boyfriend from craigslist, and it came in original box and everything, for less than half the price, and he loves it anyways. You could find a used Blade MCX or MCX2 for a really good price, and if it's from a person that looks like it's their hobby, it will probably be very well taken care of.

you or your father should check out this forum's for sale threads:
http://www.helifreak.com/forumdisplay.php?f=6

you can also feel free to ask questions on there, or check out the "newbie" section for advice, there has been many people also asking for a beginner heli, so you can read the responses.

Don't try to get a "professional" type helicopter because for those you need to make a bigger investment than just the helicopter. For an advanced heli you need an advanced radio, not the ones it comes with, and you will need to purchase a simulator to practice on because crashing the helicopter will cost you a lot of money!

Goodluck and have fun :)

I would like to hear your valuable suggestions and opinions before going to buy this product.

Expecting your reply

Thanks in Advance.

Answer
Own the New Syma S107 Remote Controlled Helicopter and experience the fun of flying one of the best and modern mini RC helicopters. This is the smallest and lightest RC helicopter on the market today produced by the well know brand Syma.

The New Syma S107 Mini Indoor Remote Controlled Helicopter can literally fit in the palm of your hand at approximately 7.5 inches long and weighing in at only 34grams. It is equipped with latest Gyroscope technology which is used to stabilize the helicopter's heading, not seen on many old style mini helicopters. The S107 comes equipped with a high grade metal body frame and not a delicate piece of plastic that many RC helicopters are made from.

You can go to amazon, from where you can buy Syma S107 helicopter best price online. To know Syma S107 customer reviews and price

Mini RC plane?

wax

I recently bought my father an RC Super-cub for father's day. Looking at the planes at the hooby shop and online kinda inspired me to give RC flight a try also.

However, rather than get a full size RC model, I was wanting to get a mini-RC plane.

Here's what I'm looking for.

Electric engines
7-10 minute flight time
Small enough to fly on a football/soccer field.
Easy to fly
Highly durable
Ready-to-fly
Price approx $40 or less

It can be either ground takeoff or hand-launch
I like the thought of the dual-engine models that use engine speeds to turn rather than rudders, but that's not required.

Amazon isn't much help b/c of a lack of reviews on many of the models, and many of the RC sites don't give all the information I need to make a good purchase

Thanks in advance

Answer
Alrighty. I have the perfect brand for you! Have you ever heard of Air Hogs? Their product line is best for beginning pilots. If you are not a beginning pilot, then the easy to fly planes and helicopters are good enough for relaxing instead of dealing with those hard to fly and maintain hobby aircrafts. From what i read about the mini- RC plane, I have tested many of the RC planes that will suit you well.

The Air Hogs Aero Ace have been my most favorite plane in the product line for many years. Although one of the batteries in the plane died out from excessive charging (not product defect, but from flying over 100 times) I decided to purchase another one. This is a bi-plane, not the jet. The jet is also good. It is more aerodynamic and fast. The plane charges up in 30 minutes (or less) and could fly for over 10 minutes; depending on how you fly. I get 15 minutes out of it sometimes. These are all hand launched planes. They have dual-engine that turns, no rudders at all. These both charge from the controller. Here are the links to the products. (You do not need to buy from this site, but it is for reference)
The Bi-plane:
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2338267

The jet version:
http://www.amazon.com/Aero-Fighter-Black-Channel-Hogs/dp/B001159U3Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1213849062&sr=1-1

Here is the Air Hogs RC F-16. It is a fast and aerodynamic plane. Although some people have said that they have experienced problems, I have not experienced any when i bought it and flew it. It flies great and fast. The charging time is 30 minutes and the flight time is about 10 minutes. It charges from the controller. Here is the link to that.

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2673965

Those are the 3 highly recommended planes I would suggest to you from my experience. I personally think that the Air Hogs company is doing a good job at making beginner aircrafts. Check them out. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to message me, and i will message you back as long as you allow messaging in your profile. If not, please message me your email. Happy flights!

I just recently got into the rc helicopters and purchased the ESky Lama V4. These mini copters are perfect for a beginner or novice who is looking for a unit that is easy to control. Another unit which is the sister to the Lama is the EFlite Blade CX and CX2. Both the Lama and the Blade are what are called coaxial units which give you effortless controlling. If you are looking for something a little more advanced, Both ESky and EFlite offer larger models that require a little more skill. All in all, most of these units will fall within your price range. Hope this helps!

Where can you buy or make a computer controlled RC helicopter with realtime video?

Where can you buy or make a computer controlled RC helicopter with realtime video? I can make it or buy but I don't know where to find it.

Answer
Computer controlled is really hard to make and you will have to know a lot about or just know a person who does electrical engineering to build your own system.

What I would suggest you do is to get a RC helicopter that is very stable to fly like this http://www.xheli.com/50h33-warhawk300-q4-comancheblue.html. This is a coaxial helicopter, it's hover by itself and you wouldn't need to worry much about it. The reason I would use a big one is because there would be more space to store a camera. Most of the cheap coaxial helicopter are only made from plastic with no metal bearings and can only fly up and down anyway.

After you have your copter set up, something like this will help you:
http://hackedgadgets.com/2005/08/10/computer-controlled-rc-helicopter/
http://www.endurance-rc.com/pctx.html <buy an adapter to connect to your transmitter, it should come with software
Note: You may have to re-program the controls in order to control your helicopter from computer.

For the camera, get something like a mini helicopter cam like http://www.xheli.com/72p-90-carcam.html or http://www.xheli.com/72p-52-voicecam.html. Get a electrician to help you design a wireless connection system between your computer and the camera. OR buy a wireless camera out of a shop that can fit into your heli. This website has the technology you talk about: http://www.geekalerts.com/real-time-video-rc-helicopter/

What you may want to search up is UAV helicopter designs. Many people use bluetooth to control their helicopter but I would stick to radio transmitter.

please mention that my helicopter is really small as you can see in this link

I live in san marcos CA so remember that what you say is available in my city or not.

Answer
You could get a 2.4 Ghz Pinhole Wireless Color Camera with audio for about $300. But at that, it is no guarantee your helicopter will fly with it. That seems like a small helicopter and the flight weight seems like it could barely fly with 7 ounces. I would suggest getting a slightly bigger helicopter first.

What model is the best mini RC helicopter? For indoor use...?

linzter

What model is the best mini RC helicopter? I want it for indoor use, and would like it to be able to hover. Of course battery life and operating time are also factors.

Answer
I bought the Air Hogs Apache Havoc Heli for my fiance, it was $25 on sale at Toys R Us, it comes with a little target that you can shoot with a laser. The target is shaped like a satellite, it blinks and make noise etc. It is a pretty cool toy, the charge runs down after a while but he has never been very bothered by it. The only thing I hate is that hair will get tangled in the tail rotor and it will break, but you can get replacements by calling their company that are cheap. It hovers well, the turning is a little hard but you get the hang of it. I also bought him the UFO one, but it is not as fun even though it has cool light up action. So, that is my review of that although I haven't played with any others.

I want to get my brother a remote control helicopter, but I have no idea which is good and which is crap. He flies (real) airplanes, and paraglides, so I think he would master a beginner heli to quickly. He has plenty of space to fly it in, I doubt if he would want to fly it in doors. I know they can be expensive, but I would like to spend under $100. I've looked at many websites, but I have no idea how to choose one, so just leaving a RC heli website does me no good. If someone could please give me model names and where I might find it, it would be VERY helpful. Even if you don't know a good one to buy, if you know what NOT to buy, please let me know! Thanks in advance! I appreciate your responses, and will pick a best answer!
DJSmesser, thanks so much, your answer is exactly what I was looking for!

What is the difference between the electric and the gas powered? Why would one be better than the other? Pros/Cons?

Answer
I have just recently ventured into the RC Helicopter world. For my first heli I decided on an ESky Lama V4 which is what they call a coaxial heli. After researching them a bit I found that the coaxial heli is perfect for beginners and novice pilots due to the controls being very easy to learn and master. This unit came with a flight simulator that allows you to fly right on your computer using the actual remote for the heli. It also came with a training kit to help aid in first time flights and landings. All this cost me about $85.00. It is a nice sized heli for still being considered a mini. It measures about 16" long and about 7" tall.
There is a another helicopter made by EFlite called the Blade CX and CX2. These are very close in comparison to the Lama but with a little higher price at about $120.00. Both are very nice helis and look great! Also both of these helis are easily upgraded to allow for individual tinkering and likes if your brother decides he really likes the RC helicopter as a hobby. Oh, I forgot to mention........ both of these are electric helis and can be flown indoors as well as outdoors. Hope this helps!

ADDITIONAL - Aside from the obvious differences between gas powered and electric powered, gas helis are a lot more expensive starting in the mid $200.00 range with some pricing in the thousands!......... not to mention the additional cost for the fuel. Gas helis are meant for outdoors especially when you consider the fumes that are produced plus they're kind've noisy. In my opinion, gas helis would be something to graduate up to after years of flying. Definitely professional status. Good luck!

i want to put a camera on a remote controlled helicopter and see where its going. how can i do this? smart tech people help me out please, thanx.

Answer
Yes you can easily but buying the mini camera is quite expensive and if your rc helicopter crashes you wouldn't be so fortunate. You can by cheap cameras but they lack in quality.

How can i control my rc helicopter from my pc and connect a camra to it so i can also see it out of my pc?

pony

I'm want to fly my helicopter around my city and control it from my pc

Answer
The radio control box you use now can be linked with software to a computer. Do a Google search: https://www.google.com/search?q=transfer+os+to+another+computer&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a#hl=en&client=firefox-a&tbo=d&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Aofficial&sclient=psy-ab&q=rc+helicopter+control+by+computer&oq=rc+helicopter+control+by+computer&gs_l=serp.12..0i13i30.62657.62657.2.65224.1.1.0.0.0.0.125.125.0j1.1.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.e4-v4YJr6zI&psj=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=f4422cad1e203d45&bpcl=38897761&biw=1272&bih=610
You will need a high gain dish antenna to track the helicopter if you wish to fly farther than 300 feet from the control station. And with a GPS on board, the copter would be preset to return home if the link is lost.
For video link from the rc helicopter: https://www.google.com/search?q=transfer+os+to+another+computer&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a#hl=en&client=firefox-a&tbo=d&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Aofficial&sclient=psy-ab&q=video+link+from+the+rc+helicopter&oq=video+link+from+the+rc+helicopter&gs_l=serp.12...64897.64897.3.71770.1.1.0.0.0.0.166.166.0j1.1.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.NaN05bHGy7E&psj=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=f4422cad1e203d45&bpcl=38897761&biw=1272&bih=610

I have seen such RC helicopter video systems used by law enforcement, military battlefield intelligence, and professional motion picture cameramen on TV shows about technology. Now there are miniature electric copters with wireless video cameras on them for indoor use. You can fly around hallways and rooms with them. Some are inexpensive. http://www.rchelicopterfun.com/blade-mqx.html
Wireless security camera weighing a couple ounces is here: http://www.amazon.com/Mini-Wireless-Color-Camera-Microphone/dp/B000YM2OIK
You can input the composite (RCA jack) video into a computer with a video capture device on USB, but I would advise against it--might not work well with the radio control. You can use a portable TV like from Viore that will show the video well.

I need to give a gift and I want to give some sort of indoor flying toy. Preferably a helicopter. It should be under $30, but reliable and it could be more expensive, just not a fortune. And again, it has to be an indoor helicopter and it would nice if it came replacement blades. links would also be helpful so that I can see it.

whats the best micro and mini sized heilcopter with the best gyro?

spartain00

and is about under a foot and at lest have replaceable parts or upgradeable parts

Answer
I always try to steer people away from cheap Chinese junk like Syma... But I have to admit the price is right. Just keep in mind that this is really a disposable helicopter. The quality control is horrendous and you will get no support from the manufacturer. Yes, some spare parts are available, but the design and engineering that goes into these cheap toys leaves a lot to be desired. As a for instance, the speed controls on Syma copters do not have any sort of LiPo cut off, so it can be very easy to ruin the battery.

For just $30 more you can get a true hobby grade helicopter with real manufacturer support if something goes wrong. For micro look at the Blade Scout: http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/blade-scout-rtf-3-ch-heli-BLH2700

For mini's, you have a lot more choices. Align makes some really fine helicopters, as does Blade. In my opinion, one of the better quality of the minis:
http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/2_382_707/products_id/220852/n/Align-T-Rex-100X-Super-Combo-Electric-RTF-Micro-Helicopter-Kit

Here is a list of quite a few micro's and minis:
http://www.amainhobbies.com/index.php?cPath=2_382_707&n=RC-Helicopters-Kits-Micro-Mini&sort=prl&filter_mfr=

Lastly, I would suggest purchasing a copter at a local hobby shop. That way you'll have local parts support and won't be waiting for the mail to arrive with a replacement part. You can just drive down the road and pick it up the same day if something breaks. A broken copter sitting on the workbench waiting for parts isn't much fun. Not to mention almost every hobby shop will have a knowledgeable person behind the counter to ask questions!

Where can I fly my RC nitro helicopter in metro manila?? are there any parks or large open spaces??

Answer
Sorry, I am not from manila, but I could give you a idea. If there are big open parking lots, you could fly there. I am sure there are open spaces. You just have to look harder. If not, sell the nitro helicopter and then purchase some smaller RC helicopters like in the 400 size.

How to reconnect my antenna to my rc car?

Jimmy

my antenna got caught in the wheel and now it is ripped off of the car completely

Answer
Ops!! Don't run your car without it, but you probably already know that. You can get a new antenna and make sure it's the same length. Take apart the receiver and you need to solder the new one in. It's delicate work. If you can't, get a new receiver. Do you have a thin plastic tube that the antenna runs thru? If not, get one because it will really protect it. If you already have one and the extra antenna wire got caught in the wheel, then it's best to cut a small piece of fuel line or use rubber band to hold the extra wire onto the plastic antenna tube. I love this r/c hobby and have nitro trucks, cars, airplanes and helicopters, even an HPI 5B Baja Buggy and it's awesome. Hope this helps and good luck !!
