Best indoor RC helicopter and durable outdoor RC airplane?

RBot1

My wife wants an RC airplane more than anything. I bought her a cheap one last year, and she crashed it on it's first flight and it tore to shreds (due to some light wind). I got it replaced, but she's now afraid to take it out even in the slightest of wind.

So, I would like to get her an indoor RC helicopter (for beginners - it has to be pretty stable and be able to take a few crashes while learning, mind you) AND an RC airplane for the outdoor - one that is much more durable, and maybe can fly in a small amount of wind.

I've been looking at Air Hogs vehicles (such as the Havoc Heli), and they look durable and great, but there's so many to choose from, I need some help chosing. Or, if there is a differnet company/vehicle that you would recommend. I am buying her one of each so she can go outside, but stay in if it's too windy...

Thanks a bunch, guys!

Answer
You are in the right field for the aircrafts you want. The Air Hogs are very durable. I personally started out with the Air Hogs product line and eventually expanded out.
For indoors, you could get the Air Hogs Havoc helicopter. It is a fun indoor only helicopter. If you let go of the throttle before the crash, the helicopter should be very durable and will last a long time. This goes for about $30.

The Air Hogs Aero Ace is a very durable indoor/outdoor plane. This plane was a big hit. People flew these indoors and outdoors. I fly this plane outdoors when there are no winds or light winds outside. Sometimes I fly this plane so high, I could barely see it! It is fun for just $30. I think the price went up though...

If you want to expand some more, you could check out horizonhobby.com and look for the E-Flite Blade MCX and the Ultra-Micro P-51. These are small planes as well. Be advised though, the Ultra-Micro P-51 is for more advanced flyers... it isn't as durable as the other planes.

Need advice on purchasing an RC helicopter.?

SonnyAngel

I am getting my dad an RC helicopter as a present. He had a small cheap Styrofoam one that had a bad connection. Despite all that, my dad really enjoyed playing with it. I think its time for him to move on to a bigger toy. Is there anything you would suggest, brands, frequencies that would work better.

Thank you!

Answer
Ok, I think I know what helicopter your dad might have flown. Now, I do not know if you could afford this or not, but you will need ~$200 USD. There is a Blade CX 2 by E-Flite that is a good co-axial helicopter for a step up from beginners. This runs at around $189.99. If you want something a little more cheaper, try the Heli-Max Axe EZ. These run at $169.99. Great co-axial helicopters that make it easy to hover. These are all 6 channel helicopters that manipulate real helicopter flight. Once your father masters this helicopter, he could move onto the Collective Pitch helicopters which are a little more advanced.

oh yes, sorry, I forgot! If you could wait, there is a smaller and cheaper helicopter you could get called the Blade mCX. Micro Coaxial helicopter. A great heli!

Are there any small RC Helicopters that use a button cell battery, rather than a rechargeable battery?

Q. I am currently temporarily disabled and was looking at small RC helicopters to entertain me. So far, all of the small ones that I have seen use a rechargeable battery that has a ~2:1 charge to flight time and seem to lose their capacity fairly quickly. I am looking for a helicopter that uses a button cell battery rather than a rechargeable one. Another alternative would be if it would be safe to modify one of those cheap helis to use a button cell.

Answer
as far as i'm concerned, a buttom cell does not provide and it will never provide enough power to lift a helicopter out of the ground. (we're both talking about toy helis right?)

you might modify one helicopter and you COULD get the blades to spin but i doubt that you'll get it to fly. it is worth a try with 3 buttom cells.

I would try with 3,4 or 5 buttom cells connected in series so when the drop off voltage kicks in, the heli flies at least for 10 seconds with no problems......

RC HELICOPTER EXPERTS!! THIS QUESTION IS FOR YOU!?

Q. I just ordered a Syma S108. They look very fun and cooler than the S107. What your opinion? Should I have bought the S107 for $22 or the S108 for $30?
Thanks God Bless.

Answer
i have never heard of this model however after looking up the model i can tell you this they are both mini / micro helicopters.
these micro helicopters are ones that are marketed towards people who are new and or just want a cheap helicopter to try out the hobby without sinking much cash on a helicopter. its also smaller and can be used in small spaces compared to full size helicopters. this model should be easy to fly due to its design.

in terms of s 107 vs s 108 they are pretty much the same and you would not see much difference.

the 107 has a larger battery though and could fly for a few minutes longer.

i would say the s108 is a good choice if your only spending like $30

is this your first helicopter?

if its your first helicopter and later your interested in something more challenging or larger you could go with something like what i did for my first RC helicopter that was above the lower entry level. if your interested in something priced a little higher but could perform better.

this is what i did with my first helicopter.

I own a thunder tiger mini titan e325 3d its electric and i found it easy to assemble( having never done it before)

i liked it and with help learned to fly using it.

you can find this helicopter at many sites

tower hobbies is a good place to buy from
http://www.towerhobbies.com/#

theirs lots of other places you could buy from too.

i would go with electric to start off. gas can be more complicated.

word of advice don't just buy the helicopter find someone willing to teach you how to do it without destroying it.

sometimes they can even help you set it up.

local RC clubs may be able to help you get more info on the hobby.

trust me get help learning so that you don't crash.

its a great hobby and once you learn can be great fun!

so the 107 and 108 are not to different. i wo

RC helicopters - how much do they cost to manufacture?

tlc289

I just bought my children one of these helicopters from Target for just over $30.00. What do you think is the cost of making this toy in China? It has a very small, lightweight motor and the body is made from lightweight foam. My guess is that it costs them about $5-7 to make. A wholesaler picks 'em up for $10 each, then sells 'em to Target for $17-20 each, then Target marks them up & sells 'em for $30 each. Am I way off on this guestimate? If I were to buy these things from someone in China, would I have to purchase a freakin' boat-load (literally) to get 'em at $10 each? I mean, why wouldn't someone in China open up shop and sell 'em for $15 each - they'd make a killin'!

Answer
The helicopter is quite cheap. The Air Hogs Havoc (which i assume you have, or some similar shape helicopter) is very simple. From front to back: There is the battery, then the wire connects to the electronic chip (servo) then next to that, is the motor, which above that is a gear which spins the propeller. Keep going further back, following the wire to the rear motor which has a gear that spins the rear propeller. Its really simple. The actual cost to manufacture this as I last read was $4.30 USD.

This is the best i could find, going any cheaper you will either get bad signal or not-so-good quality video. This will not stream to your phone, but can stream to a tv, i used to do the same with my rc truck. I simply got a small tv and put it on the porch, turned the camera on, started the engine on my rc truck, and sat down and drove. It brings a new level of control to radio control.

Remember though, the camera may only weigh a few grams, but is powered by a 9v battery, so make sure your helicopter can lift it,otherwise you may have to get a larger helicopter.

How would you build a sock-dropping RC helicopter?

paradox_ea

Assuming I buy an RC helicopter, how would you get it to drop socks? (Multiples, or one at a time.)

It needs to be simple and not too costly.

Answer
You're probably going to want some Very Small Socks (Barbie?)

If you need to drop a sock on demand, you will need a control channel on your RC helicopter, which probably makes it that much more expensive, though perhaps this is a common RC helicopter task (so the copter, I mean, might come with a 'hook' which can be caused to open/close based on a button on the controller. Again, that doesn't sound cheap.

Alternatively you might be able to achieve dropping by using special good flying. Imagine the copter has a horizontal 'pin' aimed towards the front (but moounted below the center of gravity). Then if you could tilt the copter forward, a sock might be able to 'slide off the pin',

Where you adjust the angle of 'the pin' as needed to match the flight characteristics of your chopper.

(and maybe it would be better with the pin sticking backwards). Anyway, requires leet flying skills to not drop the payload prematurely.

And probably needs a low friction connection to the sock. like a teflon ring sewn to the socket.

But I think you'll find that socks are heavy, compated to the lifting power of an inexpensive RC vehicle.

What remote control helicopter should I buy my husband?

I have been looking for days at which helicopter I should get my husband but I do not know enough about them to make a decision on one. My husband would like one he could fly inside or outside and one that is easily controlled. I would like it to be under 60 since this is his first one. Any ideas? Anything would be appreciated!

Answer
You could try the Blade Scout. It is a very beginner helicopter, it's small so it can definitely be flown inside, and its cheap $50. Blade is one of the best brand of RC helicopters. Here's a link for it....

A question on how to make an RC Airplane controled by a PC?

DELETED

Okay so I always wanted to do this, what do I need to make a RC airplane controlled by a computer and has like a camera attached for feedback? Is it possible to get mini jet engines? Is it possible for me to make a RC plane hover? If so how?

Answer
These things are all possible with enough $$. For example, check out http://www.cloudcaptech.com. The stuff is expensive, but it does what you want.

There are mini jet engines in the world, but they are extremely expensive, heavy and complicated for an RC aircraft, and they fly much too fast. I think what you really want is something that *looks* like a jet engine but is really a propeller. Those are called ducted fans, and they are small, cheap and easy to get from any RC model shop.

Any RC plane can hover if it has enough power--just point the plane straight up and give it throttle. If thrust>weight, it can hover. Hovering with the nose level (like a Harrier) is harder--it would require a dedicated lift fan, which I've never seen on an RC plane. In principle it could be done, though. But why not just build a helicopter?

How much can a cheap remote controlled helicopter lift?

I need a remote controlled helicopter that can lift a few pounds and go on a short flight of about a minute or two. It needs to be able to fly fairly well with the load and I don't want to pay a lot.. any advice?

Answer
To lift two pounds and still be controllable in flight you will need an RC helicopter with a rotor blade length of 500 to 550 mm. This comes to just over a meter rotor diameter. At this size you are looking at hobby quality kits like the very popular TRex 500. To set this helicopter up new will run about $250 for a basic transmitter, another $450 for a combo kit. (amain). Small toy helicopters from big-box stores have just enough power to lift themselves and won't be able to lift the weight. Two other options would be find an older used kit like a Hirobo Shuttle that you may be able to pick up for less than $100 or look to Hong Kong for a Trex Clone and radio where you should be able to get set up for under $400 radio + heli new.

What kind of rc helicopter should I be getting?

Chance

My dad is going to be getting me something for Christmas, $85 limit. I want a rc helicopter. Ive only had cheap walmart ones before, so i need some expertise. Im wanting a namebrand fairly decent sized helicopter that will be able take some minor crashes. I did a little research and it seems that the Align T-Rex 250 is decent. Any ideas? Remember I have $85 to spend, including taxes and shipping.

Answer
I wouldn't recommend the Align T-Rex 250, and it's over the budget anyways? The smaller the helicopter, the more crashes it can resist, and the cheaper the replacement parts are. Just the battery looks like it's 3 times more expensive than a mini helicopter, and you will need extra batteries if you would like to fly for more than 10 minutes.

Do you have a radio/controller already? If you do, you could buy the BNF version of the helicopter and it will be cheaper. If you don't, then look for the RTF version that comes with a radio/controller.

The Blade MCX RTF is $80 at Horizon Hobby
http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/blade-mcx-rtf-EFLH2200
It's a coaxil heli, so you will have to fly it indoors and outdoors only when it's not too windy. It can take a good beating, better than the t-rex, and the parts are pretty cheap.

These 3 are some I have looked at while I was doing research about rc helicopters when I wanted to purchase one. These are fun, you won't be able to do 3D tricks with them though. It depends how many channels was the one you had, these are 3 channels and good practice.

The Syma S107 is $27 at amazon. It's a beginner helicopter, but it's small and reviews say it does good in taking crashes (4 out of 5 stars).

The Helizone Combat fighter 3.5 Channels looks fun. It's $36.99 on amazon, and you can look up videos on youtube.

The Syma S107C has a built in camera, and it's $39 on amazon.

I purchased the Nano CP X BNF, and a DX6i receiver, and depending your age and experience, this is not a beginner one. But it's just something to look for in the future if you want to get into the hobby. The heli cost me $160 online, and the reciever/controller (DX6i) cost me $70 USED.

You could also suggest to him to look on craigslist for used ones, don't be uptight about it and demand a new one if your father can't afford ones over $85. I bought the DX6i for my boyfriend from craigslist, and it came in original box and everything, for less than half the price, and he loves it anyways. You could find a used Blade MCX or MCX2 for a really good price, and if it's from a person that looks like it's their hobby, it will probably be very well taken care of.

you or your father should check out this forum's for sale threads:
http://www.helifreak.com/forumdisplay.php?f=6

you can also feel free to ask questions on there, or check out the "newbie" section for advice, there has been many people also asking for a beginner heli, so you can read the responses.

Don't try to get a "professional" type helicopter because for those you need to make a bigger investment than just the helicopter. For an advanced heli you need an advanced radio, not the ones it comes with, and you will need to purchase a simulator to practice on because crashing the helicopter will cost you a lot of money!

Goodluck and have fun :)
