help choosing a RC helicopter?
Shellie
I want to get my brother a remote control helicopter, but I have no idea which is good and which is crap. He flies (real) airplanes, and paraglides, so I think he would master a beginner heli to quickly. He has plenty of space to fly it in, I doubt if he would want to fly it in doors. I know they can be expensive, but I would like to spend under $100. I've looked at many websites, but I have no idea how to choose one, so just leaving a RC heli website does me no good. If someone could please give me model names and where I might find it, it would be VERY helpful. Even if you don't know a good one to buy, if you know what NOT to buy, please let me know! Thanks in advance! I appreciate your responses, and will pick a best answer!
DJSmesser, thanks so much, your answer is exactly what I was looking for!
What is the difference between the electric and the gas powered? Why would one be better than the other? Pros/Cons?
Answer
I have just recently ventured into the RC Helicopter world. For my first heli I decided on an ESky Lama V4 which is what they call a coaxial heli. After researching them a bit I found that the coaxial heli is perfect for beginners and novice pilots due to the controls being very easy to learn and master. This unit came with a flight simulator that allows you to fly right on your computer using the actual remote for the heli. It also came with a training kit to help aid in first time flights and landings. All this cost me about $85.00. It is a nice sized heli for still being considered a mini. It measures about 16" long and about 7" tall.
There is a another helicopter made by EFlite called the Blade CX and CX2. These are very close in comparison to the Lama but with a little higher price at about $120.00. Both are very nice helis and look great! Also both of these helis are easily upgraded to allow for individual tinkering and likes if your brother decides he really likes the RC helicopter as a hobby. Oh, I forgot to mention........ both of these are electric helis and can be flown indoors as well as outdoors. Hope this helps!
ADDITIONAL - Aside from the obvious differences between gas powered and electric powered, gas helis are a lot more expensive starting in the mid $200.00 range with some pricing in the thousands!......... not to mention the additional cost for the fuel. Gas helis are meant for outdoors especially when you consider the fumes that are produced plus they're kind've noisy. In my opinion, gas helis would be something to graduate up to after years of flying. Definitely professional status. Good luck!
